  • How do GLP-1s actually work in my body?
GLP-1 plays a significant role in regulating appetite and food intake. When released after a meal, it acts on the brain's satiety centers, promoting feelings of fullness and reducing hunger. By stimulating GLP-1 receptors in the brain, GLP-1 receptor agonists can enhance these effects, leading to decreased food consumption and, consequently, weight loss. GLP-1 also slows down the rate at which the stomach empties its contents into the intestines. This delays the absorption of nutrients, including glucose, and helps maintain a feeling of fullness for longer. By reducing the rate of gastric emptying, GLP-1 receptor agonists can contribute to weight loss by extending the time between meals and reducing overall calorie intake. Another important aspect of GLP-1 is its role in promoting insulin secretion from the pancreas. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar levels and encourages glucose storage as glycogen in the liver and muscles. GLP-1 receptor agonists can improve insulin sensitivity and enhance insulin secretion, benefiting individuals with obesity and insulin resistance.
  • Will I experience side effects from weight loss medication?
While generally well-tolerated, they can have side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, especially when first starting treatment and with dose changes. However, these side effects often improve over time. You will have unlimited access to your provider to report side effects and add'l treatment and recommendations can be provided.
  • Who qualifies for weight loss medication?
You must have a BMI of 30 or greater or 27 and greater with co-morbidity such as as hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, or diabetes.
  • Do I have to inject myself?
Most patients administer the injections themselves at home with a small, easy-to-use insulin syringe. If you’re uncomfortable doing so, you may elect a family member to administer the medication for you.
  • What is the difference between Tirzepatide and Semaglutide?
Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and a Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. In other words, Tirzepatide targets two receptors whereas semaglutide targets one receptor. The reality of it is some patients do better on semaglutide and others on Tirzepatide. If the results are not what you are expecting on one medication, it might be worth switching to the other to see if it produces a better effect.
  • Do GLP-1s really work?
Absolutely! GLP-1 medications help regulate your appetite and blood sugar levels by mimicking a hormone in your body that controls hunger. They slow digestion, help you feel full longer, and reduce cravings, making it easier to stick to a healthy eating plan. The only way to lose weight is to create a calorie deficit through nutrition and/or activity. GLP-1's allow you to create the deficit thus leading to weight loss.
  • How long do I need to stay on weight loss medication?
The length of time varies based on your unique goals and progress. Many patients stay on the medication until they reach and maintain their desired weight, but we’ll create a plan that fits your needs and adjusts as necessary over time.
  • How much weight will I lose?
Most weight loss occurs in the first 3 – 6 months of starting a weight loss program. If using Semaglutide weekly injections, you can expect to lose around 10 lbs per month. Some people lose more especially when paired with a nutrition and exercise plan. More than 10 lbs a month puts you at risk of muscle loss so a slow, steady approach is preferred.
